Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter and chocolate together over low heat. set aside to cool.
Whisk together flour, baking soda and ground coffee. Set aside.
Stir sugar into cooled chocolate. Blend in one egg at a time then vanilla. Fold wet ingredients into flour mixture.
Pour into prepared 8x8-inch parchment lined and greased pan. Bake at 350 for about 20 to 25 minutes until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool pan on wire rack before removing brownies.
Mix together powdered sugar and shortening. Add coffee one tablespoon at a time to reach desired consistency. Frost cooled brownies.
