Chip and Dip Sunflowers #SundaySupper

Sunflower Chip and Dip Plate

“Everybody out of the pool!”

No need to panic. Something is brewing on the horizon. It’s not a thunderstorm. It’s fresh brewed ice tea and snacks!

Homemade potato chips and Bacon Horseradish Dip to be exact.

Sunflower Chip plate

This week Sunday Supper is throwing a Pool Party and we would love to have you join us!
Don’t worry if you don’t have a tan or new swimsuit. This is a virtual party so come as you are. Just bring your appetite!

I’ll let you in on a little secret. I can’t swim. I took lessons in school but I’m still terrified of water where I can’t stand on the bottom.
I love to wade in streams along the shoreline. I can dunk myself in the pool enough to get wet. So you’ll find me on the sideline or sitting with the kids at the kiddie pool.
Don’t feel sorry for me. I’m always closest to the food and drink. I’ll toss you a towel when you need one!
In the meantime, join me in a snack.

Sunflower Chip and Dip set

I used Russet and Yukon Gold potatoes to make my chips. Cut the chips between 1/16 and 1/8-inch thickness depending on your taste. Fry at 350 until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and season with seasoned salt or kosher salt.
Arrange on a tray by over-lapping potato “petals” to form a sunflower. Place a small bowl of dip in the center to finish off your flower.
I make several kinds of dip and switch out the bowls as needed.

Chip and Dip Sunflower table (550x550)

One of our favorite chip and dip combos is Bacon Horseradish. Bits of smoked sun-dried tomatoes round out the flavor. An easy dip to make and a definite crowd pleaser!
I’m also including my French Onion Dip recipe for those die-hard onion dip fans. I add a bit of powdered beef bouillon to the dip to kick it up a notch!

Be Bee Friendly #BeeBold It’s Easy! #ad

Bee's Delight
“This post was created as part of the Friends of the Earth #BeeBold Campaign in which I am a financially compensated blogger. The opinions are my own and based on my own experience.”

Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes.

pollinators
There is one thing they all have in common. We need their services to survive.

beebold honybee collage bee friendly

It’s our turn to return the favor. Pollinators need our help. Be bee friendly.

A study by Friends of the Earth and Pesticide Research Institute found 36 out of 71 “bee friendly” garden plants – 51% — contained neonic pesticides that are harmful to bees, with no warning to gardeners.

Watch the video below.

Like fruit? Thank a bee!

Up to 80 percent of flowers depend on pollinators like bees.

Create a bee safe zone. Being Bee Friendly is easy!

beebold safe zone

  • Plant native plants and untreated seeds. Local bees recognize and use the pollen.
  • Mix annuals, perennials and herbaceous woody perennials in your garden to provide the most availability to flowers for bees.
  • Plant a diverse range of flowers to attract many different bee species.
  • Provide a water source with rocks for bees and butterflies to perch upon.
  • bee water

  • Avoid the use of pesticides. Try alternative methods such as hand picking, attracting beneficial insects and eco-friendly insecticidal soaps and oils.
  • Erect a bee house. Houses like this one consist of tubes that mimic holes in fallen trees. These secluded spots are where native bees nest. In a bee house, bees lay eggs in the tubes. Each egg is sealed separately in the tube to develop into larvae.

  • Learn to accept some weeds in your lawn. Ditch the chemicals. This honeybee is enjoying clover in my front yard.

Kids are fascinated by bees! I love the demo we did when I was a Master Gardener with a local beekeeper. I encourage you to visit an apiary in your area.
